Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Test is waived on the basis that no effects would be expected as concentrations at the limit of solubility occur naturally in the environment and it is a substance of plant origin.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Concentrations of plant sterols are considered with reference to the key marker substance β-sitosterol, which is the major constituent by weight in plant sterols as registered. Measured concentrations of β-sitosterol in the environment are consistent with its ubiquitous essentiality in plant matter. Wash-off from soil into surface water is a natural and unavoidable process which can give rise to concentrations of the order of 1 μg/L (the limit of water solubility is estimated at 0.00055 mg/l). It is therefore considered that no long-term effects on aquatic organisms would be expected, due to the ubiquitous presence of the substance at the limit of its solubility in the natural environment.
