The loss of the alkyl group in trialkyl phosphates is due both to enzymic hydrolysis (P-O cleavage) and de-O-alkylation (C-O cleavage), the latter being known to involve reduced gluthatione as acceptor.

32P-TEP is rapidly excreted as their metabolites by both rat and mouse with 90% recovery of radioactive material in urine within 16 h and nearly complete recovery over 96 h. Urine of rats and mice were examined for metabolites of 32P-triethylphosphate. 32P-triethylposphate was excreted by both species as 32-diethylphosphate. As a further metabolite S-ethylcysteine was found. In neither case was the trialkyl-phosphate excreted unchanged.
