Based on the available data, DNELs for dermal and inhalation exposure were derived for workers:

The short-term dermal DNEL for local effects is derived from a LOAEL of 14 mg/cm2 observed in the acute dermal study. An assessment factor of 5 was applied, yielding a DNEL = 2.8 mg/cm2.

For the long-term dermal DNEL fos systemic effects, route-to-route extrapolation from the subchronic oral toxicity study was used. In order to take into account different absorption rates, the oral NOAEL was corrected. Applying an assessment factor of 50, the DNEL = 0.351 mg/kg bw/d.

The long-term inhalation for local effects is based on the NOAEC of a subchronic inhalation study. However, the starting point needs to be modified since exposure duration as well as activity have to be taken into account. Using an assessment factor of 12.5, the resulting DNEL = 0.007 mg/m3.

All values above are recalculated for Trinickel dicitrate.

Remark:

[citric acid, nickel salt] is present on the surface of an inert carrier material (aluminium oxide). Depending on the pH value to prepare the impregnation solution or present while impregnation different molar ratios between nickel and citric acid are possible.

For this reason the concentrations of the single Nickel constituents of [citric acid, nickel salt] are various. The calculated values refer to the constituent Trinickel dicitrate and have to seen as a lower threshold value.
