The biodegradability of the substance in an aerobic aqueous medium has been assessed by a study conducted to OECD Guideline No 306, "Biodegradability in Sea Water; Closed Bottle Test".
The test material attained 27% degradation after 28 days in the study and cannot be considered to have the potential for biodegradation in the marine environment under the terms and conditions of OECD Guideline No 306.
However, as 27% degradation was observed, it may be considered although the substance is not readily biodegradable, since moderate biodegradability was observed the substance may have potential to be inherently biodegradable.
The assessment of biodegradability of the substance in sea water is considered appropriate as release to the marine environment is anticipated from the substance use in off-shore oil and gas applications.
A further biodegradation study conducted in freshwater is considered unnecessary, as the substance is not anticipated to behave substantially differently in freshwater than sea water. It is therefore considered that the substance is also not readily biodegradable in freshwater. A further biodegradation study is not required for the purposes of classification and labeling of the substance.
