Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
Based on data from substances representing constituents of castor oil, dehydrated, the 3 h EC50 of castor oil, dehydrated for aquatic micro-organisms is considered to be > 1,000 mg/L.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
- 1 000 mg/L
Additional information
Data is available for substances representative of the constituents of castor oil, dehydrated.
Castor oil toxicity to the microorganisms Pseudomonas putida was tested according to the method of Robra (1976) - Wasser/Abwasser 117:80-86 (Bessems, 1988a).The oxygen consumption of P. putida cultures exposed to various concentrations of the test substance was measured and the EC10 or EC50 compared to a negative control were determined. The resulting EC50 value was 54,000 mg/L.
A similar study was run also with linseed oil (C16-18 and C18-unsatd.; rich in C18:2) according to the same protocol (Bessems, 1988b). The EC50 for this substance for P. putida cultures was equivalent to 67,000 mg/L.
Fully hydrogenated coconut oil (C8-18 and C18-unsatd.) was tested for toxicity to domestic activated sludge according to OECD Guideline 209 and EU Method C.11 (Feil, 2010). The respiration rate (oxygen consumption) of the aerobic activated sludge fed with a standard amount of synthetic sewage was measured in the presence of various concentrations of the test substance after an incubation period of 3 h. Three tests, one with a reference susbstance 3,5-dichlorophenol and two inoculum controls were run in parallel for validation purposes. Under the test condition, no dose related response was found. The 3 h EC10, EC20 and EC50 were determined to be > 1,000 mg/L (nominal).
