Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Sodium2-methylpropan-2-olate hydrolsyses in water to form inorganic sodium hydroxide and tert-butanol. Whereas inorganic substances can not biodegrade, tert-butanol was biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable but failing 10-day window

Additional information

Sodium 2-methylpropan-2-olate hydrolsyses in water to form inorganic sodium hydroxide and tert-butanol. The biodegradability of tert-butanol was studied in a CO2 -headspace test conducted according to ISO guideline 14593. After 28 days of exposure a biodegradation of 70 - 80 % were observed. However, tert-butanol is not considered to be readily biodegradable, since the required 10 -day window was not met. Therefore the test substance is regarded as biodegradable but not as readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
