First-aid measures

General Advice:

Show this material safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Call a physician immediately.

If inhaled:

Remove to fresh air.

If breathing is difficult, remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing.

If breathing is irregular or stopped, administer artificial respiration.

In case of skin contact:

Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately.

Wash off immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.

Wash contaminated clothing before re-use.

In case of eye contact:

Rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses.

If swallowed:

Do not induce vomiting without medical advice.

Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed:

• Pneumonia

• Nausea

• Lachrymation

• Suffocation

• Vomiting

• Abdominal pain

• Skin disorders

Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed:

• Treat symptomatically

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable Extinguishing Media:

• dry chemical

• foam

• carbon dioxide (CO2)

• water spray

Unsuitable extinguishing media:

• Water spray jet

Specific Hazards Arising from the Chemical:

Specific hazards during fire fighting:

• Water may be ineffective

• The product will float on water and can be reignited on surface water

Hazardous combustion products:

• Nitrogen oxides (NOx)

• Carbon monoxide

Advice for firefighters

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters:

• Wear an approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus in addition to standard fire fighting gear

Further information:

• Flammable liquid and vapor.

• Use water spray to cool unopened containers

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:

Personal precautions:

• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment

• Local authorities should be advised if significant spillages cannot be contained

Environmental precautions:

• Avoid release to the environment

Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up:

• Contain spillage, soak up with non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite) and transfer to a container for disposal according to local / national regulations (see section 13).

• After cleaning, flush away traces with water

• Eliminate all ignition sources if safe to do so

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling:

Advice on safe handling:

• Do not breathe vapors or spray mist

• Do not get on skin or clothing

• Do not swallow

• Ensure adequate ventilation

• Wash thoroughly after handling

• Keep away from fire (No Smoking)

• Keep away from fire, sparks and heated surfaces

• Do not use sparking tools

Advice on protection against fire and explosion:

• Take necessary action to avoid static electricity discharge (which might cause ignition of organic vapors)

Hygiene measures:

• Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:

Requirements for storage areas and containers

• Keep container closed when not in use. Store locked up

Specific end use(s)

• Chemical intermediate

Exposure controls / personal protection

Control parameters:

Exposure Guidelines

Chemical Name: 2-(Dimethylamino)ethanol

ACGIH TLV EU Japan: Not listed

Exposure controls:

Engineering Controls:

• Good general ventilation (typically 10 air changes per hour) should be used.

• Ventilation rates should be matched to conditions.

• If applicable, use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to maintain airborne levels below recommended exposure limits.

• If exposure limits have not been established, maintain airborne levels to an acceptable level

Personal Protective Equipment:

Eye/face Protection:

• Safety glasses

Hand Protection:

• Butyl rubber gloves with a material thickness of 0.5 mm giving a breakthrough time of > 480min.

Skin and Body Protection:

• Complete suit protecting against chemicals

Respiratory Protection:

• Use respiratory protection unless adequate local exhaust ventilation is provided or exposure assessment demonstrates that exposures are within recommended exposure guidelines.

• Self-contained breathing apparatus (EN 133)

Filter type:

• Filter type K

Protective measures:

• Remove respiratory and skin/eye protection only after vapors have been cleared from the area

• Ensure that eye flushing systems and safety showers are located close to the working place

• Use personal protective equipment as required

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity:

• Stable

Chemical stability:

• Stable under normal conditions

Possibility of hazardous reactions:

• Hazardous decomposition products formed under fire condi-tions.

Conditions to Avoid:

• Heat, flames and sparks

• Protect from moisture

• Take precautionary measures against static discharges

Incompatible materials to avoid:

• Strong acids and oxidizing agents

• Halogenated compounds

• Isocyanates

Hazardous Decomposition Products:

• Carbon monoxide

• Carbon monoxide

• Ammonia

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods:

Product:

• Dispose of in accordance with local regulations

Contaminated packaging

• Empty containers should be taken to an approved waste han-dling site for recycling or disposal
