The PBT Assessment for ethylene diacetate is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2017).
Persistence
Ethylene diacetate is readily biodegradable in one study according to OECD 301C (60% (O2 consumption) after 28 d) performed with the read-across substance 2,2'-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy)]bisethyl diacetate (CAS 111-21-7). This read-across is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5. Thus, the test substance does not meet the screening criterion for persistency and it is not considered to be persistent (P) or very persistent (vP).
Bioaccumulation
Ethylene diacetate has a log Kow of 0.1 (OECD 117). Thus, the test substance does not meet the screening criterion for bioaccumulation and it is not considered to be bioaccumulative (B) or very bioaccumulative (vB).
Toxicity
Neither long-term nor short-term toxicity tests determined effect concentrations ≤ 0.01 mg/L. Long-term toxicity testing with Selenastrum capricornutum resulted in a NOEC (72 h) ≥ 119.86 mg/L (OECD 201). Furthermore, the substance is not classified according to the consolidated Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and further amendments (ATPs). Therefore, the criteria set out in Annex XIII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 are not met and it is concluded that the substance is not T.
In conclusion, the substance is not PBT/vPvB.
