Description of key information

Section R7.1.13.3 contained within Chapter 7.A, Endpoint Specific Guidance, contains a list of chemical groups and elements that are known to confer oxidising properties.  It is considered possible to waive data for certain substances if they do not contain any of these chemical groups and elements.

•       The substance does not contain oxygen, fluorine or chlorine; or

•       The substance contains oxygen, fluorine or chlorine and these elements are chemically bonded only to carbon

•       Inorganic substances that do not contain oxygen or halogens do not need to be tested.

2,6-DTBP contains a hydroxyl group that is chemically bonded to carbon on a benzene ring.  The benzene ring is very stable by virtue of its aromaticity and di-tert-butyl groups are also stable and non-oxidizing.  The molecule does not contain any halogens.

Benzyl alcohols are considered to be very weak oxidizing agents.

In addition, the oxygen balance percentage can be calculated and provides an indication of oxidation potential.

The calculated result of -294.7 indicates negative oxygen balance and therefore this molecule shows no significant indication of oxidising potential.

Justification for classification or non-classification
