Based on all available data on ethylparaben and structural similar substances, ethylparaben is considered to have no carcinogenic potential.

Additional information

There are no data available on carcinogenicity of ethylparaben. Ethylparaben was not genotoxic in in vitro mutagenicity studies in bacteria (Ames Test) (Donath, 2012, Ishidate et al., 1984). Moreover, there are two subchronic repeated dose toxicity studies available on ethylparaben which gave no evidence of preneoplastic or neoplastic lesions. In addition, methylparaben was tested in several non-guideline studies, investigating carcinogenicity after subcutaneous and intravenous application in rats and mice. There were no preneoplastic or neoplastic lesions observed. Methylparaben was also tested in Ames tests and in two in vivo tests (chromosome aberration test and a dominant-lethal test (Litton Bionetics Inc, 1974)) which were all found negative for genotoxicity. Several chronic repeated dose toxicity studies on methylparaben gave no evidence of preneoplastic or neoplastic lesions. Propylparaben was not genotoxic in several Ames tests and a HPRT test (Brusick, 1975; McCann et al., 1975; Wollny, 2012). Based on all available data on ethylparaben and structural similar substances, ethylparaben is considered to have no carcinogenic potential.
