Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

At environmentally relevant pH, the substance exists almost entirely in the protonated form, methanethiol. Therefore, based

on the above information, data from studies with methanethiol or sodium methanethiolate are considered to represent both chemical species.

In a biodegradation assay according to OECD Guideline 301D, sodium methanethiolate was readily biodegradable, with 64% biodegradation after 21 days. Degradation of the compound met the 10-day window criterion (Thiebaud, 1995). This data is also representative of methanethiol behaviour and therefore methanethiol is considered as ready biodegradable.
