Biodegradation:

In one ready biodegradability test (OECD 301 C) indicated a biodegradation of 44 % after 28 d (initial concentration: 100 mg/L).

Based on the discussion under IUCLID "5.2.1 Biodegradation in water: screening tests", isopentyl acetate was regarded to be inherently biodegradable. A second ready biodegradability test (OECD 301 F) indicated much better biodegradation (

90 % after 37 days (88 % after 28 days), start of biodegradation on day 1, reaching 74 % at end of 10 -day-window). Under consideration of both test results, ready biodegradability is therefore concluded for isopentyl acetate.

The data under IUCLID endpoint "6.1.7 Toxicity to microorganisms" indicated that isopentyl acetate showed only at higher concentrations (there: EC10 = ca. 450 mg/L; NOEC = ca. 300 mg/L) the potential to inhibit the growth of activtated sludge bacteria. As isopentyl acetate is under environmentally realistic conditions present at lower concentrations as those used in the aboved mentioned study, the inhibition of bacteria growth by isopentyl acetate can hence be excluded.

Based on the results of the ready biodegradability study mentioned above, a high volatilisation rate (Henry's Law constant 59 Pa*(m3/mol) at 25 °C, pointing to removal from surface water into the atmosphere) and a Koc < 500 (not pointing to a high potential for adsorption to sediment and soil), no further need for conducting the simulation testing of biodegradation in surface water, sediment and soil was identified (as recommended in REACH Annex IX).
