Description of key information

With high probability acutely not harmful to microorganisms.
The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when hydroxypropyl acrylate is introduced into biological treatment plants in appropriately low concentrations.
EC20 > 1000 mg/L (domestic activated sludge, OECD TG 209)
EC10 > 300 mg/L (domestic activated sludge, BOD Test)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The toxicity of hydroxypropyl acrylate to microorganisms was investigated in three different studies according to national German guideline DIN 38412 Part 8, ASTM (Microbiological Inhibtion Testing Procedure) and OECD guideline 209, respectively. After 17 hours of exposure to Pseudomonas putida, an EC10 of 186 mg/L was determined measuring the growth inhibition (BASF AG 1987). In an ASTM guideline study, the EC10 (72h) was determined to be > 300 mg/L testing the respiration inhibition of domestic activated sludge (BAMM 1996). In an acute study according to OECD TG 209, an EC20 of approx. 1000 mg/L was measured (BASF AG 1999).

In conclusion, all results showed that with high probability the test substance is not harmful to microorganisms.
