Allantoin was observed to be readily biodegradable following a reliable study conducted according to OECD 301 B. A degradation of 76% was observed with in a period of 28 days. This meets the criteria for ready biodegradability of >60% theoretical CO2 production within 10 days after the onset of biodegradation (i.e., the production of 10% CO2 is achieved). Based on the results of this study, it is concluded that Allantoin is readily biodegradable. This study is supported by a Zahn-Wellens test (OECD 302B, inherent biodegradability) in which the substance was shown to be inherently biodegradable with 95% biodegradation by day 28.
