Description of key information

The 28-day NOEC for Lumbriculus variegatus was 81 mg/kg sediment dw (for LAS-Na).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10, LC10 or NOEC for freshwater sediment:
81 mg/kg sediment dw

Additional information

No studies on the toxicity of LAS-IPA to sediment organisms were available. The toxicity of LAS-IPA to sediment organisms may be described by the toxicity of LAS-Na and IPA according to the read-across statement in which full dissociation of the LAS-IPA in the environment is supported.

For LAS-Na three studies on toxicity to sediment organisms were available. No studies on sediment toxicity of IPA were available. The PNECsediment is based on the most sensitive species tested (NOEC of 81 mg/kg) with the addition of an assessment factor. For comparative purposes a PNECsediment for LAS-IPA was derived using the equilibrium partitioning method (EPM) and this is described in the read-across statement. The resulting PNECsediment using EPM was higher than the assessment factor method. A precautionary approach is taken to propose a PNECsediment for LAS-IPA based on the assessment factor method and the lowest NOEC from reported sediment tests with the read-across analogue LAS-Na.
