Acute toxicity of 4-tert-butylcyclohexanol to aquatic organisms was investigated for different trophic levels (algae, invertebrates and fish).

The test conducted with fish resulted in an LC50-value of 17 mg/L after 48 h. However, a 48 h study is not in line with today's standards and is regarded as not sufficient for the evaluation of the influence of p-tert-btuylcyclohexanol on fish. Thus, further calculations using QSAR-models and read-across to a structural analogue of p-tert-butylcyclohexanol, L-menthol (CAS 2216-51-5) were performed. On that basis an LC50-value of p-tert-butylcyclohexanol above 1 mg/L can be assumed. For further calculations (e.g. PNEC-values) the worst-case LC50 of 6.82 mg/L, determined by using the EPIsuite-QSAR is used.

The aquatic toxicity of p-tert-butylcyclohexanol on invertebrates has been evaluated on an acute study on daphnids (Daphnia magna) resulting in an EC50 (48 h) of 46 mg/L (nominal). For algae an ErC50 (72h) of 45 mg/L (mean measured) and a NOErC of 14 mg/L (mean measured) is reported based on growth rate.

The influence of p-tert-butylcyclohexanol on microorganisms was tested in a 3 h respiration test on activated sludge. The EC50 (3 h) was determined to be 225 mg/L (nominal); the NOEC (3 h) and EC10 (3 h) values were 100 mg/L (nominal) and 103 mg/L respectively.
