Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Tert-dodecanethiol is not readily biodegradable. Oxygen consumption or CO2 evolution in inoculated vessels containing tert-dodecanethiol was negligible in several RBTs, indicating that it was not readily degradable under the conditions of these tests.

Jenkins (1990) is a GLP-compliant, closed bottle ready biodegradability study, with reference compounds, testing oxygen consumption, which follows OECD guideline 301D. The study is considered reliable and adequate for assessment. Oxygen consumption in vessels containing tert-dodecanethiol was negligible, indicating that it was not readily degradable under the conditions of the test.

Davis (2009) is a GLP-compliant ready biodegradation study following OECD guideline 310. The study can be considered reliable and suitable as a study for this endpoint. Primary degradation is observed (up to 83% in 28 days) but no CO2 is produced from TDM and almost the same decay of TDM is also observed in presence of sterilised inoculum (MLSS). Therefore no real biodegradation can be concluded from this study.

In Thiebaud (1994), the aerobic biodegradation of tert-dodecanethiol in water was examinated during 28 days through OECD Guideline 301 D and EU Method C.4 -E. The results have shown that 10.4 % of the substance is degraded after 28 days. Therefore, according to these results, tert-dodecanethiol is considered as not readily biodegradable.In test conditions, the substance is not inhibitory.
