The biodegradation of BBSA in water was determined in a 28day-ready-biodegradability test with carbon dioxide evolution (modified Sturm test). The substance was biodegraded for 12-23%, hence the substance is not ready biodegradable under the standard test conditions.

The biodegradation of BBSA was also determined in a standard simulation test in natural water (OECD 309) with [14C]-N-n-butylbenzenesulphonamide. The degradation rate and degradation products were measured. Two different concentrations (10 μg/L and 95 μg/L) were applied.

The mineralisation rate was negligible. The DT50 values for [14C]-N-n-butylbenzenesulphonamide were determined to be 858 days (10 μg/L) and 985 days (95 μg/L) in the water phases. Therefore, [14C]-N-n-butylbenzenesulphonamide is persistent. At both concentrations <1% of the applied radioactivity (AR) of organic volatiles were trapped. Only amounts of <1% AR were detected as CO2.

A soil degradation study is not considered necessary because exposure of the soil is unlikely. Furthermore, the substance has a low adsorption potential, the biodegradation in water is low and no transformation products were found in the water simulation test.
