The substance chloroacetyl chloride is included in the harmonised classification and labelling list. It is classified as N, R50 according to Directive 67/548/EC and Aquatic Acute Category 1 according to the CLP Regulation.

The substance is classified as Annex I Index : 607-080-00-1 , N, R50.

Chloroacetyl chloride hydrolyzes quickly to chloroacetic acid. Data on chloroacetic acid are provided.

The nominal NOEC in a 21-day Daphnia reproduction test was 32 mg/L for monochloroacetic acid.

Two studies with Scenedesmus subspicatus were independently performed at two different laboratories. The obtained results for biomass and growth were within the same range, i.e. 25-28 μg/l for biomass and 30-70 μg/l for growth (48-72 hour EC50-values). The results obtained in these studies support the classification included in the harmonised classification and labelling list.
