Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Not P/vP: The aromatic sulphonic acids completely ionise in water even at low pH. The salts of these acids are the hydrotropes. The available biodegradation studies with the acid and with the salt forms (Hydrotropes Category) supporting the conclusion of ready biodegradability in water.

Not B/vB: The measured Log Pow of the ASA substances is less than 1.0. It ranges from -0.96 to 0.41 and indicates a low partitioning potential from water., therefore potential for bioaccumulation is low.

Not T:

ASA category members have been shown to be very corrosive. There are no comcern regarding acute and repeated dose toxicty. The available mutagenicity tests performed both on ASA and related salt (Hydrotropes Category) have negative results both with and without metabolic activation. There are no carcinogenicity studies for the aromatic sulfonic acids. There are two chronic studies for the related hydrotropes (the salt form of these acids) where no effects were seen on the animals. The available reproduction and developmental toxicity studies both on ASA and Hydrotropes substance do not show any effect on the examinated organs. Due to the corrosive nature of ASA substacnes, some local effects were seen in the stomach and the internal examination findings suggested a secondary effect (i.e., corrosion) rather than a chemical toxicity.
Therefore classification for carcinogenicity category 1 or 2, or mutagenicity category 1 or 2 or reproductive toxicity category 1, 2 or 3 is not warranted.
