Conclusion on classification
Classification releated key information:
- The concept of ready biodegradability does not apply to inorganic substances.
- Significant bioaccumulation in biota is not expected for this substance (see IUCLID section 5.3).
Acute toxicity:
- Fish:
o Lowest LC50 (96h) = 1.46 mg Fe/L meas. initial (read across from soluble iron (III) species - FeCl3)
o ERVcompound = 4.03 mg/L
- Aquatic invertebrates:
o EC50 (48h) = 2.3 mg Fe/L meas. (read across from soluble iron (III) species – FeCl3)
o ERVcompound = 6.34 mg/L
- Algae: EC50 (72h) > 100 mg test item/L nominal (measured iron concentration < LOQ)
Chronic toxicity:
- Fish:
o Lowest NOEC (30 d) = 0.0235 mg Fe/L (based on soluble iron (III) species – FeCl3)
o ERVcompound = 0.065 mg/L
- Aquatic invertebrates:
o Lowest NOEC (21 d) = 0.16 mg Fe/L meas. (based on soluble iron (III) species – FeCl3)
o ERVcompound = 0.44 mg/L
- Algae: NOEC (72h) ≥ 100 mg test item /L nominal (measured iron concentration < LOQ)
Conclusion on classification
A 28 d transformation/dissolution test was conducted with Iron (III) orthophosphate. The substance is poorly water soluble. The transformation/dissolution test according to OECD 29 showed that the release of iron from the substance after 7 days was lower than the LOD of 0.1682 µg/L at a loading of 1 mg/L (pH 6). This concentration is far below the lowest acute ecotoxicity reference value – ERVcompound of 4.03 mg/L. Therefore, the substance is not classified for acute aquatic hazard according to the consolidated version of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (dated: 01.01.2017) and further amendments (ATPs)
Furthermore, the lowest chronic ERVcompound for Iron (III) orthophosphate of 0.065 mg/L is higher than the dissolved iron concentration measured in the 28-d transformation/dissolution test (0.503 µg/L) at a loading of 1 mg/L and pH 6. Therefore the substance is not classified for chronic aquatic hazard according to the consolidated version of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (dated: 01.01.2017) and further amendments (ATPs).
