Calcium lactate fully dissociates into Ca2+ ions and lactate. The transport and distribution behaviour of lactate in the environment can be understood in terms of the transport and distribution behaviour of lactic acid.

Lactic acid is readily biodegradable. Biodegradation of simple (metal) cations is undefined.
