Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound isovaleryl chloride: No data available.
Hydrolysis product isovaleric acid: No data available.
Because there are no data available for the parent compound and its hydrolysis product, the toxicity to microorganisms is assessed on the results of the structurally similar substance isobutyric acid.
Isobutyric acid: Depending on local conditions and existing concentrations, disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible.
Hydrolysis product HCl: No data available.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
39 mg/L

Additional information

Parent compound isovaleryl chloride and hydrolysis product isovaleric acid:

Isovaleryl chloride (CAS 108 -12 -3) rapidly decomposes in water and forms HCL (CAS 7647 -01 -0) and isovaleric acid (CAS 503 -74 -2). Since there are neither experimental data available for isovaleryl chloride nor for its hydrolysis product isovaleric acid, toxicity to microorganisms is assessed on read across to the structurally similar substances isobutyric acid (CAS 79 -31 -2) and valeric acid (CAS 109 -52 -4).

Valeric acid and isobutyric acid:

In a valid 40 hour growth inhibition study, test cultures of the cilliate Tetrahymena pyriformis were exposed to valeric acid and isobutyric acid at five graduate concentrations under static conditions (individual concentrations not reported). The assay was performed in three independent replicate runs on the basis of a preceding range finding test. The IC50 value based on growth inhibition was determined to be 189 mg/L for valeric acid and 190 mg/L for isobutyric acid (Schultz, 2011).

In addition, the toxicity of isobutyric acid was tested to the test organism Pseudomonas putida according to German Industrial Standard Guideline DIN 38412 part 8. The 17 -h EC10 and EC50 were determined to be 39 mg/L and 57 mg/L, respectively (nominal, not neutralized; BASF, 1989).
