Description of key information

The 96-hour LC50 for Rainbow trout was >1000 mg/l, at 12°C and for Fathead minnows was >1000 mg/l, at 22°C for Santicizer 278 and is therefore considered to be non-toxic to fish at its limit of solubility.

Two proprietary short term toxicity tests to fish were conducted using Santicizer 278, and these are used as Key and Supporting Studies for this endpoint. The 96-hour LC50 for Rainbow trout (Analytical Bio Chemistry Laboratories, 1979a) was >1000 mg/l (at 12°C), and for Fathead minnows (Analytical Bio Chemistry Laboratories, 1979b) it was also >1000 mg/l (at 22°C). In both tests the concentration used was 1000 mg/l. This concentration was determine by range finding tests to be appropriate as moratlities did not occur below this concentration.

 

This exceeds the solubility of the test compound (0.0015 mg/l at 25°C) but since no mortalities occurred even at this concentration, Santicizer 278 is considered non-toxic to fish at its limit of solubility. 

In addition, QSAR (ECOSAR, USEPA 2008) can predict LC50 for fish up to a log Kow of 5.0, above which it predicts no effects at saturation. Santicizer 278 has a log Kow of 7.0 so no effects would be expected according to the model.
