Basic Brown 1 Acetate is an insoluble substance ( water solubility ca. 0.8 ug/l << 1 mg/l for insoluble solids at 20°C) that, consequently, cannot undergo hydrolysis or biodegradation and in fact it is not possible to test for degradation (abiotic, i.e. hydrolysis and/or biotic, i.e. biodegradation) in the aquatic compartment.

Furthermore, the analogue substance 1 was tested for inherent biodegradation following OECD 302B (BASF, 1989). Under the test conditions analogue substance 1 showed again very low water solubility , and also in this instance no degradation was observed.
