Description of key information
Disturbances of the biodegradation process of activated sludge are not to be expected if the test substance is correctly introduced into waste water treatment plants.

Data on the toxicity of 5 -chlorovaleryl chloride to microorganisms is available from a short-term respiration inhibition study with activated sludge from a domestic wastewater treatment plant (BASF, 1996). From this study no inhibition of respiration was observed up to the highest tested concentration of 1000 mg/L.
5 -chlorovaleryl chloride is expected to hydrolyse in contact with water to form 5 -chlorovaleric acid (CAS 1119 -46 -6) and hydrogen chloride (CAS 7647-01 -0). Information on these hydrolysis products was not available.
