Description of key information

Distribution coefficients (Log D) at 20 deg C:

log D = - 1.16 at pH= 2.0 (stomach)

log D = - 3.53 at pH= 5.5 (skin)

log D = - 6.09 at pH= 7.4 (plasma)

log D = - 6.14 at pH= 8.0 (river)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
-6.14
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

Databases of experimental values report a log10 Pow of malic acid as being - 1.26, typical of the undissociated form.

In case of human and environmental assessment, because we need to consider all the charge-state forms of malic acid dissolved in water and in octanol, the log D (distribution coefficients) were estimated taking account for the pH dependence of the substance in aqueous solution.
