The density of solid slags at ambient temperature is 2.7 - 4 kg/L, depending on the concentration of iron oxides in the slag.

For granulated blast furnace slag (GBS) the following data are reported by Euroslag (2003):
    • true density: 2.796 - 3.070 g/cm³
    • apparent density: 2.021 - 2.843 g/cm³
    • bulk density: 0.689 - 1.427 g/cm³ (porosity: 2.5 - 31.2 % v/v, grain size < 0.5 mm: 3.6 - 78.6 % w/w, grain size < 3.2 mm: 81.1 - 100.0 % w/w)

These data are suported of results of Ehrenberg (2001), who measured densities of GBS of 2.9 g/cm3, and a bulk density of 1.3 g/cm3.

GBS consists predominantly of glass phases. Due to the low order of the molecules and ions in the liquid, the product obtained by rapid cooling (GBS) is less compact than the product obtained by slow cooling (ABS) with tight clusters in crystal lattices. For slag from the same manufacturer, the compacted apparent density of ABS is 3 g/cm3, the compacted apparent density of GBS is 2.7 g/cm3 (Tossavainen and Lind 2005)
