Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

One 72-hour algal study, using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
30 mg/L

Additional information

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of the reaction product of 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and polyphosphoric acid (PPA), hereafter referred to as HEMA Phosphate, to the freshwater green alga, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, over a 72-hour static exposure period. These data were used to determine EC50 (the concentration causing 50% inhibition) values for 72-hour cell density, 0-72-hour cell yield, and 0-72-hour average specific growth rate. No-observable-effect concentrations (NOEC) were determined for each endpoint based on the highest concentration not significantly different from the control. Test solutions were analytically verified at initiation and termination by LC/MS. The mean measured concentrations were , 3.75, 7.60, 15.0, 29.0, 60.1 and 119 mg HEMA Phosphate/L. The results of the test are as follows:

72 -hour cell density: EC50 >120 mg/L; NOEC = 30 mg/L

0 -72 -hour cell yield: EyC50 > 120 mg/L; NOEC = 30 mg/L

0 -72 hour growth inhibition ErC50 > 120 mg/L; NOEC = 30 mg/L
