Description of key information

Chromium trichloride hexahydrate solution is corrosive to aluminium and steel. Considering that anhydrous chromium trichloride slowly dissolves in water to chromium trichloride hexahydrate, corrosivity is also assumed for chromium trichloride, anhydrous.

Additional information

The corrosiveness of chromium trichloride hexahydrate solution was established in general accordance to UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria 5th revision, 2009, Part III sub-section 37. UN Recommendation Part III, sub-section 37.

The UN guidelines stipulate in section 37.4.1.4.1 that the mass loss or corrosion rate of the most corroded coupon shall be no more than 13.5% in 7 days or 6.25 mm/yr respectively. Both materials were shown not to withstand immersion in chromium trichloride hexahydrate solution for 7 days, with the aluminum coupons dissolving within 3 to 4 days and the steel coupons dissolving within 7 to 8 days. Hence the mass loss for both coupons was 100% in 7 days. The corrosion rates calculated for the material were up to 84 mm/yr for aluminum and 35 mm/yr for steel.

The provided MSDS sheet for the solution stated a pH of less than 2.7. According to the relevant Pourbaix diagrams neither aluminium nor iron are considered stable at this pH further underlining the results from this test.
