The limit of quantification (LOQ) for the TOC instrument was 1 mg C/L and all the values obtained from the test substance samples and control sample were below this level.

Additional information

Due to the complexity of alcohols, C18-22, distn. residues, it was not possible to take a chemical specific analysis approach to quantify the water solubility of the substance. Instead, a generic Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis approach was utilised. Based on the reliable (Klimisch 1) study on water solubility by Cartee and Schaefer (2010), the solubility of alcohols, C18-22, distn. residues in water was less than the limit of quantification of 1 mg C/L for TOC analysis. The actual water solubility of the substance will be significantly lower than the 1 mg C/L limit of quantification. Chemical analysis of alcohols, C18-22, distn. residues indicates there are five main component categories - alcohols, esters, ethers, aldehydes and paraffins. Of these categories, the most water soluble fraction will be the alcohols. This fraction is comprised of Octadecanol, Eicosanol, Docosanol and Tetracosanol. Using the WATERNT program within US EPA's EPISuite (v.4.0), these alcohols have predicted water solubilities of 0.007 mg/L, 0.0006 mg/L, 0.00006 mg/L and 0.000006 mg/L, respectively. Using a conservative approach, the maximum water solubility for alcohols, C18-22, distn. residues will be 0.007 mg/L.
