Endpoint:
effects on growth of green algae
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 13 May 2022 to 25 July 2022
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 201 (Freshwater Alga and Cyanobacteria, Growth Inhibition Test)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Analytical monitoring:
yes
Details on sampling:
Samples (2 samples of 20 mL) were taken from all test solutions and controls at the beginning of the test prior to addition of the algae. At the end of the growth test, samples (2 samples of 20 mL) were taken directly from representative replicates per nominal loading rate and controls. Therefore, at test initiation and test termination there were two sets of samples (one analytical and one retain sample) for each loading rate and the control.
Vehicle:
no
Details on test solutions:
The sterilised synthetic growth medium (OECD medium) according to OECD 201 was used as growth medium.

Origin: SAG, Culture Collection of Algae at Pflanzenphysiologisches Institut of the University at Göttingen, Albrecht von Haller Institut, Untere Klarspüle 2, 37073 Göttingen.
Strain number: Catalog No 61.81 SAG.

Cultivation: The stock cultures were maintained fulfilling the criteria of the OECD guide-line (culture medium recommended by Bringmann und Kühn (1980) [8]). Prior to testing a pre-culture was established in OECD growth medium (as described below) to obtain exponentially-growing algae for the test. The culture duration of the pre-cultures was 3 days.

Description of key information

Two forms with different metal compositions from the set were tested, forming the outer boundaries.
The result of form 1 most sensitive and can be considered as worst case with an EC50 of 0.98 mg/l (72h).
Form 2 has an EC50 of 2.69 mg/L (72h).

The test item found to be acutely harmful to algae. A value of 0.98 mg/L results in an acute and chronic classification in Category C1.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.98 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
