Additional information
The acute toxicity of test item Dodecylvinylether to the water flea Daphnia magna STRAUS was investigated in a 48-hour static test according to OECD Guideline 202.
The test substance has very low water solubility (< 0.1 mg/L). To prevent direct contact of the test organisms with the undissolved test substance the exposure was carried out in glass beakers into which were placed organism chambers consisting of a glass tube with a stainless steel mesh bottom. The glass tubes were submerged in beakers with test medium with the top of the tube sufficiently above the surface of the test medium to avoid overflow from the surrounding surface layer in the beaker. The necessary volume of the test substance was calculated from the density. The test substance was pipetted carefully, on the water surface outside of the glass tubes. The test vessels were shaken for about one day, so that the test substance did not form an emulsion. Throughout the exposure period oily drops of undissolved test substance were observed on the water surface outside of the glass tubes, while no undissolved test substance was visible on the water surface in the glass tubes.
The test substance was tested at limit concentration 100 mg/L, based on the outcome of a range finding study. lnstead of mortality the test criterion of the acute toxicity is immobilization of the daphnids after 48 hours of exposure which is expressed as EC (effect concentration). Those animals were considered to be immobile which were unable to swim within 15 seconds after gentle agitation of the test vessel. The validity criteria were fulfilled by the test. The following values were determined based on nominal concentrations:
EC0(48h) ≥ 100 mg/L
EC50 (48 h) > 100 mg/L
EC100 (48 h) > 100 mg/L
