Executive summary:

A study was performed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME) to determine the toxicity of the test item Expanded Graphite Powder on the growth of the unicellular fresh water green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata exposed for a test period of 72 hours under static conditions according to OECD 201. The test item was given in sterilised growth medium (100 mg/L loading) to obtain the maximum achievable test item concentration. For the determination of algal growth three replicates for each concentration and eight replicates for controls (test medium only) were exposed to nominal loadings spaced by a factor of

2 (6.25, 12.5, 25.0, 50.0 and 100 mg test item/L). No test substance related inhibition of growth rate and yield was observed up to the highest loading of 100 mg test item/L.

The EC50 was determined to > 100 mg/L and the NOEC value was determined to 100 mg/L.
