- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:

- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- September 2009
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Interpretation of results:
- non flammable
- Remarks:
- Migrated information
- Conclusions:
- Based on the study results the test item was classified as “not highly flammable“.
- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 19 Oct. 2020
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Test procedure:
- burning time over 250 mm for metal powders or metal alloys
- Remarks on result:
- not determinable
- Remarks:
- No independent burning or glowing of FeNb Fines M45 over the length of the pile was observed in the preliminary test. No main test is required and no main test was performed.
- Interpretation of results:
- not classified based on GHS criteria
- Conclusions:
- The test was carried out according to UN method N.1.
No independent burning or glowing of FeNb Fines M45 over the length of the pile was observed in the preliminary test. No main test was performed. Since no independent burring or glowing over the length of the pile was observed the test item has not to be classified as flammable solid according to GHS / CLP Regulation (EC) No°1272/2008: Annex°1:2.7. - Endpoint:
- self-heating substances / mixtures
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance undergoes exothermic decomposition at a temperature below or equal to 140°C
- Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
- data waiving: supporting information
- Reason / purpose for cross-reference:

Preliminary test
The test was started by trying to ignite the pile at one end with a gas flame. During heating the test item glowed. During the ignition period of 5 minutes the test item was not ignited. When the flame was removed glowing was observed for the following 130 seconds. Afterwards no further reaction was observed. No burning or glowing spreaded over the length of the pile was observed. The test was repeated with the same results at the other end of the pile.
The main test was not performed because no burning or glowing over the length of the pile was observed in the preliminary test.
Preliminary Test: About 118 g of the test item were used to form the test pile. It was tried to ignite the pile at one end with a gas burner. After 5 minutes, the flame was removed from the test item. During the ignition no independent burning or glowing over the length of the pile was observed.
Main Test: No independent burning or glowing of the test item over the length of the pile was observed in the preliminary test. Therefore, no main test was performed.
Discussion and Conclusion: The test was carried out according to UN method N.1. No independent burning or glowing of FeNb Fines M45 over the length of the pile was observed in the preliminary test. No main test was performed.Since no independent burring or glowing over the length of the pile was observed the test item has not to be classified as flammable solid according to GHS / CLP Regulation (EC) No°1272/2008: Annex°1:2.7.
Description of key information
non flammable on ignition (massive and granular form);(EU Method A.10; UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1)
non flammable in contact with water (massive and granular form)
no pyrophoricity (massive and granular form)
not self-heating (massive and granular form)
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Non flammable solid: applicable for the massive and granular form (MMAD: 991 µm) and fine granular form (FeNb Fines M45; MMAD 485 µm).
Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected.
Based on screening procedure the substance is not be considered to have self-heating properties.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification: The substance is not combustible therefore not considered to be classified as flammable solid. Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected.
The available data on self-heating properties do not meet the criterial for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification: Based on screening procedure the substance is not be considered to have self-heating properties. Only a weak exothermic reaction is reported beginning at about 408 °C.
