Acute oral toxicity
No data are available. A waiver is appropriate for this endpoint in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII as the substance is corrosive.
Acute inhalation toxicity
A waiver is appropriate for this endpoint in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII as the substance is corrosive. However a published study of non-standard design is available in which the acute inhalation toxicity has been tested in different species (rat, mouse, guinea-pig and rabbit). Similar values for the LC50 were obtained for the different species. In rats, the LC50 values for exposures of 5, 15, 30, and 60 minutes were 700, 390, 270, and 185 ppm, respectively. At concentrations near the LC50, few signs of intoxication were observed immediately after exposure, except for irritation of the eyes and nose. Several hours after exposure, the animals exhibited lethargy, dyspnea, and general weakness. Except at concentrations above the LC90, death generally occurred 12–18 hours after exposure. Animals that survived for 48 hours generally survived for the duration of the observation period. Loss of body weight was also observed, but was considered nonspecific and was attributed to anorexia.
According to the CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, Fluorine is classified as Acute Toxicity Inhalation, Category 2 (H330, Fatal if inhaled). However, based on the available data, a classification as Acute Toxicity Category 1 was proposed for the inhalation route.
Acute dermal toxicity
No data are available. A waiver is appropriate for this endpoint in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII as the substance is corrosive.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Fluorine is classified according to the CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 as Acute Toxicity Category 2 for the inhalation route (H330). This classification is not consistent with the data reviewed and therefore a classification is proposed as Acute Toxicity Category 1 for the inhalation route.
