Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The assessment of the biodegradability of the substance CAS 218502-12-4 (Direct Black 168 Na Li salts) has been done by read-across from an structural analogue, CAS 93281-13-1 (Direct Black 168 Na salt). There is one study available for the substance with CAS 93281-13-1 (Direct Black 168 Na salt) done according to the OECD 301A (readily biodegradability). The results of the test gaves as result a degradation of the substance after 28 days of 0% . In view of the results, it was concluded that the colorant Direct Black 168 Na does not have a rapid biodegradation in the specific conditions of the 301A guideline.

Both substances CAS 218502-12-4 (Direct Black 168 NaLi salt) and CAS 93281-13-1 (Direct Black 168 Na salt) have the same organic anionic structure, therefore it is expected the same biodegradability concerning this organic part. Whereas the counterion of the substance CAS 93281-13-1 (Direct Black 168 Na salt) is the sodium, the ones of the substance with CAS218502-12-4(Direct Black 168 NaLi salt) are sodium and lithium. The inorganic cations do not contribute to the biodegradation of the substance and therefore, it is justified to consider that the substance with CAS 218502-12-4 (Direct Black 168 NaLi salt) will have at most the same degree of degradation of the substance with CAS 93281-13-1 (Direct Black 168 Na salt), which is "not readily biodegradable".
