- Conclusions:
- P-phenylene diisocyanate should be considered as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and as non-flammable solid (for UN regulations)
- Executive summary:
In the preliminary screening test following the EU and UN method, the test item was heated with the flame of a teclu burner. When ignited with the flame of a teclu burner, thetest item started to burn. After approximate 1 min the flame reached the marker. The test item burned with an orange, soothing and sparkling flame. The combustion with flame of the test item propagated the 200 mm within 3 min and 44.91sec.
Therefore, a burning rate for EU-regulations were performed. Six experiments were conducted. The burning rate showed the combustions propagated the 100 mm between 1 min 52.56 sec and 3 min 37.34 sec. The shortest burning time being more than 45 seconds. Therefore, the test itemp-phenylene diisocyanateshould be considered as not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and as non-flammable solid (for UN regulations).
Reference
First, a safety test was performed. A small amount of the test item was heated on a magnesia groove with a gas burner in order to derive safety precautions. The test item burned with soothing flame. A black light residue was observed.
Determination of burning rate.
