Description of key information
There is no algal toxicity data available for the test substance. The test substance is a member of the Glycol Esters Category submitted by The American Chemistry Council's (ACC) Aliphatic Esters Panel (Panel) under the High Production Volume (HPV) Chemical Challenge Program (ACC, 2003). Information from a Screening Information Data Set (SIDS) developed in that program serves as supplementary or weight-of-evidence in the current dossier. The glycol esters chosen to supply additional information are very closely related in molecular structure They exhibit similar behavior with respect to physicochemical , environmental fate. Category ester compounds with similar structures and functionalities were of low acute toxicity to freshwater algae at or above the effective water solubility limits of the substances. Ethane-1,2 -diylbis(oxyethane-2,1 -diyl) bisheptanoate (CAS 7434 -40 -4) had a 72-hr EC50 of 559 mg/L (biomass) or >712 mg/L (growth rate) and with an EC10 cited as 253 mg/L and 318 mg/L, for biomass and growth rate, respectively. Heptanoic acid, oxybis(2,1 -ethanediyloxy-2,1 -ethanediyl)ester (CAS 70729 -68 -9) had an estimated 120-hr EC50 estimated to be 25 ppm or 25 mg/L (study guideline not specified). Heptanoic acid, ester with 2,2,4 -trimethyl-1,3 -pentanediol (CAS 71839 -38 -8) had a reported 72-hr EC50 >2000 mg/L (WAF, nominal loading rate) and a NOEC of 2000 mg/L based on both area under the growth curves and specific growth rates. The latter study was conducted following GLP and according to OECD 201. The most reliable values for hazard assessment purposes were the 72 -h EC50 and NOEC values of >2000 mg/L.
