Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Eye: Eye irritation and corrosion. Flush immediately with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Eyelids should be held away from the eyeball to ensure thorough rinsing. Get medical assistance.
Skin: Burning of the skin. Immediately flush the skin with 5% Sodium Thiosulfate solution, while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. If irritation persists get medical attention. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
Inhalation: Remove exposed person from exposure areas to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration, preferably mouth-to-mouth. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Call a physician.
Ingestion: If conscious, drink large quantities of milk and any common cooking (vegetable) oil if available. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Take immediately to a hospital or physician. If vomiting occurs administer additional water. If unconscious, or in convulsions, take immediately to a hospital. DO NOT attempt to give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Fire-fighting measures
Suitable Extinguishing Media: Use dry chemical or carbon dioxide to extinguish fire. Water may be ineffective but should be used to cool fire-exposed containers, structures and to protect personnel. Use water to dilute spills and to flush them away from sources of ignition.
Fire Fighting Procedures: Exposed firefighters must wear certified positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus with full-face mask and full protective clothing. Cool down the containers and equipment exposed to heat with a water spray.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: May react with metal and form hydrogen gas. Approach fire from upwind to avoid hazardous vapors and toxic decomposition products.
Combustion Products: Irritating or toxic substances may be emitted upon thermal decomposition. Thermal decomposition products include iodine fumes.
Accidental release measures
Evacuate area, remove ignitable substances, and provide maximum ventilation. Unprotected persons should move up wind of spill. Only personnel equipped with certified, self-contained breathing apparatus or full face-piece airline respirators with auxiliary SCBAs operated in the pressure/demand mode should be permitted in area. Dike area with soil.
Large spills should be placed in closed containers for recovery or disposal. If dilution with water has occurred, treat with alkaline containing neutralizing chemicals such as sodium carbonate and clean up as a spill residue on absorber. For small spills and large spill residues, apply sodium carbonate, then recover on absorber, such as vermiculite, and place in closed containers for disposal. After all visible traces of spilled materials have been removed, thoroughly flush area with large amounts of water. Remove respiratory and skin and eye protection only after vapors have been cleared from area.
Handling and storage
Handling: Wear eye, skin and respiratory protection when handling. Wear fresh clothing daily. Keep away from heat, sparks or flame. Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. Do not breathe vapor or mist. Wash thoroughly after handling. Use only with adequate ventilation. Ventilation must be sufficient to limit employee exposure to iodine/acid vapor in work area at or below permissible exposure limit. Do not take internally. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in work area.
Storage: Keep away from sunlight and other sources of heat. Keep from contact with alkaline substances concentrated ammonia and other reactive or combustive materials. Keep away from explosive mixtures. Do not store in open, unlabeled or mislabeled containers.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Engineering Controls: Safety shower and eyewash should be in the facility. Provide local exhaust or general dilution ventilation.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Eye Protection: Wear chemical safety goggles and face shield. Have eye-wash stations available where eye contact can occur.
Skin Protection: Natural or synthetic rubber gloves. Boots, aprons, or chemical suits should be worn when necessary to prevent skin contact. Personnel protective clothing and use of equipment must be in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.133 and 19 CFR 1910.132.
Respiratory Protection: Wear approved full or half face pieces (with chemical goggles) respiratory protective equipment for routine work purposes when air concentrations exceed the permissible exposure limit. Use appropriate Gas filtration Cartridge. Respect respirator and cartridge use limitations.
Stability and reactivity
Stability: Stable under normal conditions of use. Protect from sunlight. The product will darken when exposed to sunlight.
Incompatibility: Explodes on contact with ethyl hydroperoxide, ignites on contact with magnesium, perchloric acid, potassium, potassium chlorates, metals, and other strong oxidizers.
Hazardous Reactions/Decomposition Products: Oxidation products may include iodine fumes and hydrogen iodide gas
Disposal considerations
Place in appropriate closed container. Depending on waste acidity use recipient resistant to acid.
Eliminate in a appropriate hazardous waste managment facility.
