- Endpoint:
- explosive properties of explosives
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 1997
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Part I: Classification procedures, test methods and criteria relating to explosives of Class 1
- Version / remarks:
- 2nd revised edition, 1995
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Key result
- Test series:
- UN Test series 2
- Remarks:
- Test was performed according to UN Test A.1 (BAM 50/60 steel tube test). A negative result (assessment "no") can be regarded also as a negative result of UN gap test. The tested substance was WAKO V-50.
- Method:
- UN Test 2 (a): UN gap test
- Parameter:
- other: A significant portion of unreacted substance remains
- Value:
- 0
- Result:
- negative, not sensitive to detonative shock
- Remarks:
- According to a statement of the German competent authority BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung) the testing of WAKO VA-044 can be waived baised on the experience with WAKO V-50.
- Key result
- Test series:
- UN Test series 2
- Method:
- UN Test 2 (b): Koenen test
- Parameter:
- limiting diameter (mm)
- Value:
- 1
- Result:
- negative, no explosion
- Remarks:
- The limiting diameter is < 1.0 (mm) and the effect in all tests is of type "O".
- Key result
- Test series:
- UN Test series 2
- Method:
- UN Test 2 (c) (i): Time/pressure test
- Parameter:
- other: Time for a pressure rise from 690 to 2070 kPa (ms)
- Value:
- 16 230
- Result:
- negative, no or slow deflagration
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- In all three types of test series 2 of the UN recommendations on the Transport of dangerous Goods (5th revised edition) (UN gap test, Koenen test, Time/pressure test) a "-" is obtained. The substance can therefore be regarded as too insentitive for acceptance into class 1.

Referenceopen allclose all
thermal sensitivity: Using 2 mm and 6 mm orifice, a short fizzling and a small smoke fountain were observed after approximately 30 seconds.
mechanical sensitivity (shock): white dust in experiment 1 and black residue in experiment 4 were obsereved.
mechanical sensitivity (Friction): Every experiment yielded a black line on the porcelain peg. According to the German competence authority BAM ("Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung"), this observation is no sign of explosive properties.
Description of key information
According to the UN recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods (5th edition) 2,2'-Azobis-(2-(2-imidazolin-2 yl) propane dihydrochloride can be regarded as too insensitive for acceptance into class 1.
The substance is considered as “not explosive under the conditions of guideline EU A.14”.This guideline does not cover the explosive properties of dust consisting of test item (resp. mixtures of dust and air). Therefore, the result is stated as “not explosive under the conditions of guideline EU A.14”
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Explosiveness:
- non explosive
