Description of key information

Research has been performed on a number of chromium salts.

Chromium occurs naturally in water and is not considered to be accumulative and will biotransform into alternative organic and inorganic salts, although will remain as Cr 3+.

Algae appear to be the most sensitive organism for short term exposure (significant inhibition at just over 1 mg/l for the acetate), but fish NOEC is reported to be 0.15 mg/l for chronic exposure of Cr 3+

The UK Environment Agency has proposed a maximum limit and this is used to determine the PNEC Aquatic of 47 µg/l for Cr 3 +.
