Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

> 500 g/L at 20 °C, pH = 8.29 - 9.39 (OECD 105, EU A.6) (dispersible in any proportion, gel formation at about 500g/L at 20 °C)
CMC result: ca. 100 mg/L

Additional information

The water solubility for two oligomers (3EO and 5EO) of the test substance sorbitan monooleate, ethoxylated (1 -6.5 moles ethoxylated) (CAS 9005-65-6) was determined using flask method. Since the substance is dispersible in water in any proportion and a gel is formed, the solubility was estimated on the basis of a visual inspection.

For poorly soluble surface active substances the CMC can help to define a limit value for water solubility taking into account the concentration of substance in solution, when micelles begin to form. Surface tension of a solution depends on the concentration of the surface active substance. When micelle formation starts there is no more change in surface tension even if the concentration of surface active substance is increased. Therefore the CMC was determined by using a tensiometer.

The CMC of two oligomers (3EO and 5 EO) of the test substance as diffcult to achieve as the samples were poorly water soluble and this lead to them fouling the measuring plate of the instrument. Therefore, only approximate CMC curves and values could be obtained and should not be taken as absolute:

Oligomer 3EO: ~ 100 mg/L (literature value 33.7 mg/L)

Oligomer 5EO: ~ 35 mg/L (no literature value available)
