Conclusion on classification

No hazard was identified from Niobium(II)-Oxide. Acute toxicity tests on fish, aquatic invertebrates, aquatic algae and microorganisms are available. The substance is highly insoluble (1.74 µg/L at 22 °C)and did not show any effects on the tested organisms in saturated solution.

Fish:

Niobium(II)-Oxide was proven to be non-toxic in fish (Danio rerio). Lili (2005) investigated potential substance effects at several concentrations up to 100 mg/L by applying an emulsifier. No effects were evident in this test. As actual test substance concentrations were not analytically verified, the NOEC is based on the highest nominal test concentrations of 100 mg/L.

Scheerbaum (2003) conducted a limit test at a nominal loading of 100 mg/L. The actual test substance concentration was verified to be below 1 mg/L. No toxic effects were observed throughout the test.

Aquatic Invertebrates:

The 48-h acute immobilisation test of Niobium(II)-Oxide to D. magna was conducted under static conditions at the saturated solution level (Nb < 1 mg/L). No biological significant effect was observed.

Aquatic Algae:

In a 72-h acute toxicity study, the cultures of Desmodesmus subspicatus CHODAT (Strain No. 86.81) were exposed to Niobium(II)-Oxide at the saturated solution level (Nb < 1 mg/L) under static conditions. Niobium(II)-Oxide was found not to inhibit the biomass growth and growth rate of the freshwater green alga D. subspicatus.

 

The assessment of ready biodegradability is not applicable to inorganic substances.

Based on the high insolubility of the substance in water and the results from the study investigating the bioaccessibility of Niobium(II)-Oxide in different artificial body fluids, it is not expected to bioaccumulate.

With respect to the information available for this substance (presented above), the substance is not classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment (short or long-term) in accordance with Regulation (EC) 1272/2008.
