Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
melting point/freezing point
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
01/06/2012 - 05/06/2012
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Non-GLP study according to protocol developed by fragrance industry. No deviations from protocol.
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: "The Registration for REACH of Natural Complex Substances used as Fragrance Ingredients" by EFFA/EFEO
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Litsea cubeba oil is a Natural Complex Substance (NCS) with multiple constituents, therefore the transition from liquid to solid will not be sharp. The „Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance” from ECHA mentions in chapter R7.1.2.3, that «Melting points are not normally carried out for mixtures ». Therefore it is recommended in the EFFA/EFEO guideline „The Registration for REACH of Natural Complex Substances used as Fragrance Ingredients” to describe the state of the an essential oil after two days at +5°C and -20 °C rather than determining a transition temperature.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
other: visual observation
Melting / freezing pt.:
< -20 °C

The substance was observed to be a clear mobile liquid at 20ºC, after 48 hours at 5ºC and after 48 hours at -20ºC.

Conclusions:
The melting point of Litsea cubeba oil is < -20ºC.
Executive summary:

The melting point of Litsea cubeba oil was investigated according to the methodology proposed by the EFFA/EFEO guideline „The Registration for REACH of Natural Complex Substances used as Fragrance Ingredients”. By visual observation it was found that

Litsea cubeba oil is a mobile liquid at 20ºC and a mobile liquid after 2 days at -20ºC. Therefore, it was concluded that the melting point of Litsea cubeba oil is < -20ºC.

Description of key information

The melting point of Litsea cubeba oil was investigated according to the methodology proposed by the EFFA/EFEO guideline „The Registration for REACH of Natural Complex Substances used as Fragrance Ingredients”. By visual observation it was found that Litsea cubeba oil is a mobile liquid at 20ºC and a mobile liquid after 2 days at -20ºC. Therefore, it was concluded that the melting point of Litsea cubeba oil is < -20ºC.
