Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Test method:
The prepared sample is deposited on a cetamic plate as a strip, approximately 2 cm wide and 4 cm long. An attempt to ignite th sample from one end is made with a glowing platinum wire for about 5 seconds. The wire is heated at ca. 1000 °C. The attempts are repeated twice if not successful. The burning behaviour is observed.
The test is performed at room temperature and at 100 °C or below the melting point if it is lower than 100 °C.
For the higher temperature test, the sample is placed on a special metal sample holder in a horizontal glass tube and conditioned for about 30 minutes in a pre-heated drying oven at that temperature. The ignition test is performed without delay in the hood with appropriate air velocity.
The combustibility of the product is rated in accordance with the course of reaction and characterized as a burning class or number.
Class 1 to 3 indicates no spreading of fire. For class 4 to 6, the fire spreads.
Class 1: no ignition
Class 2: brief ignition and rapid extinction
Class 3: localized combustion or glowing with practically no spreading
Class 4: glowing with sparks or slow decomposition without flame
Class 5: burning with flame or spark generation
Class 6: very rapid combustion with flame propagation or rapid decomposition without flame - GLP compliance:
- no

Results for 2 -chloromandelic acid:
Burnign class 2 at 20°C.
Burning class 2 at 100 °C.
Class 2: brief ignition and rapid extinction.
Test can be considered as screening test for flammability of solids (EC test A.10).
As the fire is not spread, the substance is probably not a highly flammable solid.
