Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
41 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
23 mg/L

Additional information

Disturbances of the biodegradation process of activated sludge are not to be expected if the substance is correctly introduced into waste water treatment plants. This was confirmed by the results on aerobic biodegradability (see section 5.2 ) and the respiration inhibition test with activated sludge following OECD TG 209, where an EC20 of ca. 400 mg a.i./L was determined (BASF, 1996).

In a cell multiplication inhibition test with Pseudomonas putida following DIN 38412, part 8 (1991; similar to ISO 10712, 1996), growth of P. putida was inhibited by glyoxal (40% content) at concentrations higher than ca. 50 mg test mat./L. The EC50 was determined to be 102 mg test mat./L corresponding to ca. 41 mg a.i./L.
