Guillot et al. published in 1982 studies on skin and eye irritation which were considered to be valid (RL2).
Skin irritation:
The scores obtained for erythema and oedema at both of the treated sites in all six animals at the reading times were totalled. The sum obtained was then divided by the total number of readings to provide a mean score termed the primary cutaneous irritation index (PCI). The total number of readings (erythema + oedema) were 48 corresponding to two application sites on six animals at 1, 24, 48 and 72 hr after removal of the patches. The slightly different AFNOR scale (PCI below 0.5, non-irritant; 0.5 - 3. slightly irritant; 3 -5, moderately irritant; 5 - 8, severely irritant) was used to classify the substance as corrosive.
Eye irritation:
Six rabbits were observed after 1 hour, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 days. DMS (0.1 ml) was applied with and without rinsing the eyes after treatment. The result presented as an acute ocular irritation score (the most severe of the mean score per treatment group) justifies the classification extremely irritating.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Respiratory irritation:
Due to experience in handling DMS could be regarded as irritating to the respiratory tract. For substances and mixtures classified as skin corrosive, the additional labeling EUH071: Corrosive to the respiratory tract should be used due to the fact that no acute inhalation test data are available and which may be inhaled. However, due to the fact that the substance is classified as fatal if exposed via inhalation and DMS is an transported isolated intermediate in accordance with the regulation (EC) 1907/2006 article 18 (4) no exposure via inhalation is expected only in cases of an accident. Therefore, the additional labeling is not required.
Skin and eye irritation:
DMS has to be classified as skin corr. 1A and eye damage 1and labeled with H314: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
