Details on test material:
Definitive 7 day testing was conducted on the less than 300 um size fraction at the 1 mg/L loading at pH 6 and the 10 mg/L loading at pH 6 and pH 8. A comparitive study was conducted with the less than 300 um size fraction and the less than 1 mm size fraction, in which the T/D P screening test (24 hour test at 100 mg/L loading) was conducted, to determine the efect of size fraction on transformation/dissolution.

Testing of the less than 300 um size fraction:

The less than 300 um size fraction of the low copper Ni matte underwent the T/D P screening test at pH 6, 7, and 8. After 24 hours, the dissolved concentrations in the pH 6 test were 455.4 µg Ni/L, 9.6 µg Co/L, 6.0 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe. After 24 hours, the dissolved concentrations for the pH 7 test were 378.4 µg Ni/L, 8.0 µg Co/L, 3.9 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe. After 24 hours, the dissolved concentrations for the pH 8 test were 303.5 µg Ni/L, 6.1 µg Co/L, 2.6 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe.

 

The 1 mg/L loading was tested at pH 6. The results of the study indicate dissolved concentrations were 32 µg Ni/L, 0.7 µg Co/L 0.5 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe. The total dissolved Ni, Co, Cu, and Fe concentrations for the 7-day acute tests at pH 6 for the 1 mg/L loading were all significantly less than their respective ERVs.

At 1 mg/L loading at pH 6, TUNi is the major contributor to the TU, with the Ni(aq), reaching 0.26 TU at 168 hr. The 168 hr value of TU was 0.27 TU. Using the pH 8 Ni ERV of 68 µg Ni/L, the same approach would yield a 168 hr TU of 0.5 TU.

The 10 mg/L loading was tested for pH 6 and 8. The results of the pH 6 study indicate dissolved concentrations were 303 µg Ni/L, 6.1 µg Co/L, 2.2 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe. The total dissolved Ni concentrations for the 7-day acute tests at pH 6 for the 10 mg/L loading was significantly greater than the Ni pH 6 ERV.

The results of the pH 8 study indicate dissolved concentrations were 111.4 µg Ni/L, 2.3 µg Co/L 0.9 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe. The total Ni concentrations for the 7-day acute tests at pH 8 for the 10 mg/L loading was significantly greater than Ni pH 8 ERV.

Testing of the less than 1mm size fraction:

The less than 1 mm size fraction of the low copper Ni matte underwent the T/D P screening test at pH 6, 7, and 8. After 24 hours, the dissolved concentrations in the pH 6 test were 139.3 µg Ni/L, 4.2 µg Co/L, 6.78 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe. After 24 hours, the dissolved concentrations for the pH 7 test were 149.6 µg Ni/L, 3.3 µg Co/L, 2.9 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe. After 24 hours, the dissolved concentrations for the pH 8 test were 85.1 µg Ni/L, 1.9 µg Co/L, 2.8 µg Cu/L, and below detection limit for Fe.
