Additional information

Skin irritation:

The potential of 2 -Ethylhexanal to cause acute dermal irritation or corrosion was assessed by a single topical application of 0.5 ml of the test substance to the intact skin of 3 white New Zealand rabbits for 4 hours under semi-occlusive dressing (OECD 404; Hoechst 1988). The average score (24, 48 and 72 hours) for irritation was calculated to be 2.1 for erythema and 0.9 for edema. The irritation findings were reversible in all animals within 14 days.

In a supporting skin irritation study with undiluted 2-ethylhexanal, exposure times of 1, 5 and 15 min caused slight to moderate erythema of the dorsal rabbit skin while a 20 h application caused hemorrhage and necrosis (BASF AG 1964). In a further study a 4 h application caused distinct erythema and edema (BASF AG 1978). The effects were consistent for the next 48 h. At the end of the observation period of 8 days slight erythema with scaling was observed.

Eye irritation:

In a study according to OECD Guideline 405 (Hoechst 1988) each of three white New Zealand rabbits received instillations of 0.1 mL of the unchanged test substance to the eye and left unwashed. Scoring was performed 1, 24, 48 and 72h after instillation. The scores for cornea, iris, conjunctivae and chemosis were 0.0, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.2, respectively (mean of the 24, 48 and 72 h readings). All findings were reversible within 72h after instillation.

In a supporting eye irritation study in rabbits, 50 µL of the test substance were applied to the conjunctival sac of one eye in 2 animals and caused slight erythema and chemosis and effects were reversible within 72 h (BASF AG 1964).

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data 2 -Ethylhexanal has to be classified for skin irritation according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC (R38). The criteria of EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 are not met.
